Dr. Diether Dehm is much more than just a member of the German Parliament – his tireless work as an author, songwriter and peace activist should at least be mentioned in the same sentence. In all these roles Dehm is committed to promoting social justice and peace.

On his website, which is available in German only, he writes about his childhood: “My father Otto Dehm was a trained locksmith and grew up as the son of a garbage collector in a rear-house two-bedroom apartment (sharing a toilet between six tenants), where I also spent a lot of time during my childhood.”

“At 17-years-old, my father was tank driver in Greece and later, after the war, became one of the well-known Frankfurt footballers who campaigned against re-armament and supported trade union rights. He died at the age of 48, presumably after continuous exposure to chemical barrels stored improperly at his workplace.”

Dehm continues, “Perhaps my life would have been completely different if I hadn’t learned so much from my parents and had come to experience German socially left-wing parties at the age of 16 with the support of my family and a socially progressive democratic education policy in the German state of Hessen – as the first student in the family.”

“In the lyrics for the German musician, Klaus Lage, I wrote about my father in the song “Monopoly”: ‘As a child you were the strongest man to me / One who can somehow solve everything / But this is not a model train / What do you start?’ ”

Dr. Dehm’s commitment to enlightenment and peace is also reflected in his co-founding of the German internet portal Weltnetz.tv. Weltnetz.tv serves as a hub for various online projects to strengthen and disseminate a counter-view in the public through independent reporting.

At this year’s “Stopp Air Base Ramstein” action week, Diether Dehm was also active again and sang the powerful song “Wir schwören ab!” accompanied by pianist Michael Letz at the final rally together with Prince Chaos II. It’s a real highlight to watch!

We thank Dr. Dehm for his commitment to peace and social justice because we at Human Connection also see these values as the basis for a future worth living for future generations. And of course a big THANK YOU for your support, dear Diether!
