Their Wohnwagon – a self-sufficient mobile home – launched as an idea in 2013. Wohnwagon is a peace project and a symbol for change and sustainable living. More and more people slowly become aware that natural resources are not infinite. But what should the eco-friendly lifestyle of the future look like? According to Wohnwagon it should be self-sufficient and in harmony with nature, but still be equipped with the amenities of civilization such as warm water and internet.
The basic idea for the project’s creators, Theresa Steininger and Christian Frantal, was to reduce living space to the essentials and still have a beautiful, harmonious living environment with which we can unlock nature as a living-space. As Victor Hugo said: „Nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come.” This is also the reason why more people are consciously opting for a life in harmony with nature. Theresa Steininger answered the question as to why she founded this project as follows: „The greatest motivation was certainly to be able to make a difference and to shape something, to play according to my own rules. I’m sure there was always a little bit of world-saving idealism involved. ‘This has to be different,’ I often thought, and I was glad when I got the chance to try it.”
The caravans look beautiful, harmonious and natural; not at all how one imagines a conventional caravan. Its residents are self-sufficient in energy and water and never have to pay rent again. And they can even change the location of their dwellings as they wish.
Of course, the whole idea also has its „disadvantages” – if you want to call them that. Because the caravan offers only limited space and therefore one cannot, as in a typical house, senselessly hoard objects until the housing bursts at the seams. Here people are encouraged to focus on the essentials – living the awareness that less is often more.
The caravans are not made for the wilderness, but are intended to bring self-sufficiency to the cities. Growing vegetables, producing electricity and keeping animals, totally self-sufficient and independent, that is probably the dream of many changemakers. Combining urban living space with the desire for the outdoors and freedom was the idea behind this great project.
At Human Connection we promote positive change in the world, which is why we love what Wohnwagon is doing. Let’s explore what it means to live in harmony with nature and in community with wonderful people.
We’re sending a heartfelt THANK YOU to Theresa and Christian for their kind and supporting words!
